Firefighters were called to 188-190 West Shaft Road just before midnight on Tuesday, March 11, to find the duplex fully engulfed in flames. Crews battled the blaze for about 90 minutes before getting it under control.

One side of the duplex was home to a single resident, who escaped with minor injuries. The other side housed a family of five, four of whom escaped before first responders arrived. Tragically, a 4-year-old child was found inside after firefighters fought their way through the inferno, the Berkshire County District Attorney said.

Two family members, an adult and a minor, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to North Adams Regional Hospital before being airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Two others suffered minor injuries and received treatment locally, authorities said.

Officials have not yet released the names of the victims as they work to notify family members.
